Choi Min Soo was born in Seoul in 1962 into a prominent entertainment family with over eight decades of involvement in acting and singing; his father was actor Choi Moo Ryong, his mother was actress Kang Hyo Shil, and his maternal grandparents were Jeon Ok (known as the Queen of Tears) and Kang Hong Shik (an actor, film director, and singer from the Japanese occupation period who was honored as a "Merited artist"). After graduating from Seoul Arts College, Choi made his film debut in 1985 with Son of God, adapted from Park Bong Seong's manhwa. In 1993, he met June Elizabeth Kang at an international Miss Korea Beauty Pageant where she was crowned "Miss Canada," and after proposing following their first meeting, they married on June 18, 1994, in Seoul and went on to have two children together.
