About

Takakura Ken was a renowned Japanese actor celebrated for his brooding demeanor and stoic screen presence, earning the Japan Academy Prize four times—more than any other actor. After graduating from Meiji University in Tokyo, he auditioned impulsively at Toei Film Company in 1955 while seeking a managerial position, debuting in Denko Karate Uchi (Lightning Karate Blow) in 1956. His breakthrough came with the 1965 films Abashiri Prison and its sequel Abashiri Bangaichi: Bokyohen, in which he portrayed a charismatic ex-convict antihero; during his time at Toei until 1976, he appeared in over 180 films. He achieved international recognition through notable roles in Too Late the Hero (1970), The Yakuza (1974) opposite Robert Mitchum, Black Rain (1989) directed by Ridley Scott alongside Michael Douglas and Andy García, and Mr. Baseball (1992) with Tom Selleck. He was married to singer Chiemi Eri from 1959 to 1971.
