Meiko Kaji is a Japanese actress and singer born in Chiyoda, Tokyo, who graduated from Yakumo Academy high school in Meguro and began her film career at Nikkatsu studio in 1965 under her real name, Masako Ota, before receiving her stage name from director Masahiro Makino in 1969. She became famous for her roles in iconic 1970s films including the "Stray Cat Rock" series (1970–1971), "Female Convict 701: Scorpion," and "Lady Snowblood" (1973), for which she also performed the theme song "Shura no Hana," and earned four awards from five nominations for her 1978 film "Sonezaki Shinju." In addition to her extensive film career and later television work beginning in the 1980s, she is an accomplished singer whose songs gained renewed international attention after being featured in "Kill Bill," leading to the 2009 release of her single "Onna wa Yametai" and her first album in 31 years, "Aitsu no Suki-so-na Burusu" (2011), despite declining numerous Hollywood acting offers.
