Vivian Wu, born Wu Jun Mei in Shanghai to a prominent movie family, is a Chinese actress and producer who is the great-granddaughter of tobacco magnate Wu Tingsheng and daughter of actress Zhu Man Fang. She made her film debut at age 16 in 1983 with "Forever Young," and after graduating from Hawaii Pacific University in 1987, was discovered by director Bernardo Bertolucci to play Wenxiu in "The Last Emperor," earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Italian Film Festival and establishing herself as the third Chinese actress to break into Hollywood. Recognized as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine, she went on to participate in numerous films including "The Gone Daughter" (1993) directed by Oscar Luis Costo, whom she married in 1996. Throughout her career, Wu has received multiple prestigious awards including the 1998 American Independent Film Spirit Awards, the 2007 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and various accolades from international film festivals through 2018.
