Bilibili is making a bigger push beyond China, and for international BL and danmei fans, the development is worth watching.
The Chinese video platform's main bilibili – All Your Fav Videos app is now available through the U.S. App Store, with English among its supported languages. Bilibili has also been developing AI-powered translation technology intended to help Chinese content reach audiences outside its home market.
That doesn't mean Bilibili's enormous Chinese catalog has suddenly become globally available — and it certainly doesn't mean every drama or danmei adaptation on the platform is about to receive an English release.
But it could remove some of the barriers that have historically made Bilibili more difficult for international viewers to navigate.
Why Bilibili matters to BL fans
Bilibili occupies an unusual place in China's entertainment ecosystem.
It's frequently compared to YouTube because of its enormous user-generated video community, but Bilibili is also a major platform for animation, entertainment, games, livestreaming and professionally produced content.
Its separate international service has already distributed Chinese animation and other licensed titles outside mainland China, including works familiar to danmei audiences.
One of the most recognizable examples is Heaven Official's Blessing, the animated adaptation of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's danmei novel, which has been distributed internationally through Bilibili.
For international viewers, however, there has historically been a significant divide between the much larger Chinese Bilibili ecosystem and the content made available through its international services.
That distinction remains important.
Bilibili is investing in translation
One particularly interesting part of Bilibili's international strategy is AI translation.
In its 2025 annual report, Bilibili said it was using AI-powered translation technology to help content reach global audiences.
The company has also discussed multilingual tools capable of going beyond conventional subtitles, potentially lowering the localization barrier for the enormous amount of Chinese video content that never receives a traditional international release.
Meanwhile, Bilibili's U.S. App Store listing presents the platform in English as a destination for anime, gaming, technology, culture and community content, while recent app updates have expanded language support.
For viewers who have previously navigated the Chinese platform through browser translation, fan guides or limited knowledge of Mandarin, even improvements to the interface and translation layer could make a meaningful difference.
Does this mean China's BL catalog is going global?
Not yet.
That's where some of the excitement surrounding Bilibili's latest international push needs qualification.
Bilibili already had an international presence before this development, particularly through its Bilibili TV service in parts of Asia. This isn't simply a case of Bilibili suddenly launching outside China for the first time.
More importantly, international availability does not automatically mean viewers will receive the same catalog available in mainland China.
Individual dramas, donghua and other productions can still be subject to separate distribution agreements, geographic restrictions and localization requirements.
China's regulations surrounding queer media are also a separate issue from whether Bilibili has the technical infrastructure to translate and distribute content internationally.
So claims circulating online that international users now have access to exactly the same content as viewers in China should be treated cautiously unless Bilibili confirms that directly.
Why this could matter for BL and danmei
For BL fans, the interesting story isn't whether Bilibili can become another YouTube.
It's whether the company's increasingly international infrastructure creates new official pathways for Chinese BL, danmei adaptations and queer-adjacent content to reach viewers who previously couldn't easily access them.
There is already a significant global audience for Chinese danmei. Titles such as Heaven Official's Blessing have demonstrated that these stories can travel far beyond their original market when official translations and distribution are available.
Bilibili is now building more of the infrastructure needed to reach those viewers directly.
Whether that actually results in a substantially larger internationally accessible catalog remains an open question.
For now, the platform's growing international availability and investment in multilingual technology make Bilibili worth watching — particularly the next time a Chinese production with BL or danmei connections appears on the service.
Whether that ultimately translates into more Chinese BL, danmei adaptations or queer-adjacent titles becoming officially accessible to international audiences remains to be seen.
